Antique
Clock
An antique clock is not simply a piece of
furniture. It is unlike other antiques in that it is a working
piece of art and history.I always try to buy an antique clock in
working order. It may not be so simple to repair or even possible
to do so. Only try this if you are sure that you have a reputable
and skilled clokmaker on hand or are competent yourself in this
area. You may of course get a better deal on a clock which is not
working, but it may not be worth it.
The antique clock was primarily used as a
timepiece. In our time we have digital clocks galore and even our
wristwatch can wake us up in the morning, but in times past this
was not the case.Your digital clock may lull you to sleep or wake
you up with your favorite radio station, but there is nothing like
the gentle sound, every hour on the hour, of a chime or bell from
your grandfather clock. Also known as a
"longcase
clock".
The antique clock of today was present in days gone by in homes
with very high ceilings. If you are considering the purchase of a
grandfather clock, be sure you know the ceiling height of your home
as well as the entrance. It would be a shame not to stand it up in
its glory because the ceiling is too low!
An antique clock is also furniture. It compliments your home with its mahogany case
and brass clock face.Be sure to take into consideration the overall
decor of the room you are intending to place your
clock in.The longcase or grandfather clock was originally a
pendulum clock that hung on the wall, the case being added later.
The grandfather clock has become an art form and very desirable to
collectors. There are many factors which determine the value of an
antique clock.Specifically age, quality and condition. Some clocks
of this from the late 17th or early 18th century have sold for
$500,000.00.
There are two types of movements in a pendulum clock.
Eight day movements and thirty hour movements. This means that this
is the interval at which they must be wound. The 8 day clocks have
a weight which drives the pendulum and one which drives the bell or
chime. These clocks have keyholes on either side of the dial to
wind each one. Some clocks also came with the added feature of
having a moon dial or a tidal dial for local tidal times.
Some clocks have been repaired or altered intentionally.Consult
your professional if you are unsure.
Keep time with your antique clock. Hear the
chime?
